India Thrash Sri Lanka In One-off T20

August 8, 2012

Team India lead by Mahendra Singh Dhoni could hardly put a foot wrong in this Sri Lanka tour. The neighbours had always been kept quiet in throughout the tour by the men in blues. After a clean 4-1 victory over them in the ODI series the only T20 match has also been grabbed by the visitors. The momentum was with the Indians all the way through over the past few weeks. The only question that Sri Lanka could have asked before this T20 match that could have given them some inspiration to fight back is the law of average. But Mahela Jayawardene and his men did not have the required enthusiasm to break the streak of an in form team. And neither the outcome of the match has surprised anyone. It’s India again who go pass the line one more occasion in yet another windy warm evening in Kandy.

India came into the match with the confidence booster of winning the ODI series comprehensively. But they did not have a sound record in the last 5 twenty-twenty matches where India won just once. Sri Lanka on the other hand would have been inspired from their previous series performance against the Aussies. The pitch looked to be a little mystery later on the evening. But it did look to be a very good batting track earlier. Sri Lanka having won the toss chose to field first and seemed like they would be happy to chase down 160 or so.

India in spite of losing Gambhir in the very 2nd over just did not look back from there. The guy who had got him bowled, Eranga the youngster shown some character though. It’s a very interesting stat that he has got his 1st wickets in all the formats of the game in his very first over. Not sure how many have achieved this before him. But after that dismissal Sri Lanka seemed to have been lost from the game. Virat Kohli announced his arrival with some delightful strokes. All knows that what he can do with the bat in the position no 3 and what he has done for his IPL franchise, but some people may have said that he hasn’t done much for his country in the T20s. Prior to this match he had a single 30 plus score. But tonight right from the outset he looked to be in the same knick as he was throughout the whole one day series.

The kind of shots he played today really shows that whatever the format you are playing, the basics of the game do not change. You don’t need to smash the ball every time whether it’s a limited over match or not, sometimes ease and grace does the trick for you. What has been found to be the most eye catching quality of him in this series that he seems to control the flow of the game regardless of the time when he is batting and also the situation as well. Whether it is at the beginning of his innings, in the middle or towards the game, he has looked to be the man under complete control of the situation. Even tonight right from the ward go one could not stop the balls from going into the fence instead of a five men packed off side field. It clearly indicates that how good a form he has been dealing with.

Sri Lanka tried there best to pull the things back to a good extent. After the ball got a little older everyone found it difficult to score quick runs. That’s the reason why India ended up managing a total of 155 in spite of having 7 wickets in hand which otherwise was looking like being well above 160 at one stage. Raina played his part later on. His  34 of 25 towards the end of the innings might not have been highly entertaining when compared to some of his other knocks, but it surely helped India to register a par score at the least.

From there India would have been looking for some early wickets as the Lankans bat deep. They indeed have some exciting players in the middle and lower middle order so as the top of their batting. And one man who has been a revolution in this tour with a comeback continued to make his mark by providing the exact start what the doctor had ordered for the Indians. He took 3 for 27 from his quota of 4 overs and really broke the backbone of the Lankan batting by removing the top three of their batsmen within just 35 runs. The bowler is none other than Irfan Pathan who was elected to be the man of the match and rightly so. When the selectors for the upcoming tournaments will look back at the performance in this series, they will definitely find Irfan as a shining star who seemed to have been disappeared from the Indian squad. It has been a great come back for him with the ball as well as the bat when his contributions were required.

Indian bowlers kept the things really tight in the middle of the innings when it mattered the most. Dinda bowled well and picked up a few towards the end to make a 4 wicket haul for him. Ashwin did a fine job. But Kohli after his half century with the bat bowled 3 overs for the economy of under 4 and a half. During that period the Lankans really struggled to score, boundaries were really to come by. And from this context if you see the innings of Virat Kohli you will find that his performance along with the figures of Pathan has actually separated the two sides with a big margin of 39 runs. India were sharp in the field, specially inside the circle. Apart from a few drop chances of tonight they have really set high standards in the ground fielding as well as in the outfield. All in all it was a superb outcome for the visitors from this tour as they have outplayed the hosts everywhere and in every department comprehensively. No reason why the nation can’t hope for a lightening performance when they come back here once again to participate in the upcoming T20 world cup.
