Brazil vs Paraguay,Copa America Cup 2011,Quarter Final #3

July 18, 2011

Upsets continue to hit Copa America 2011 Quarter Finals. Firstly it was Peru who beat the favorites Colombia in the 1st quarter final. Colombia who came without conceding a single throughout the group stages conceded 2 goals during the extra time after a goalless regulation time. Then it was the time for the hosts Argentina. Also at match #4 once again a favorite team were beaten, Chile this time. But the most upset result can easily be said is the match #3 that I am talking about. The Latin American power house mighty Brazil got eliminated by the Giant Killers of the night Paraguay!

Paraguay came into the match with almost nothing to lose, although they had held the same side a few days ago but still Brazil is considered to be the most dangerous team in the eliminators. Paraguay also had problems with their front line striker Roque Santa Cruz who had an injury problem before this match.

The strategy of Gerardo Martino seemed to have been very clear…go and just defend and try to hold Brazil as long as possible. Brazil started the match with quite a good dominance in and the ball most of the time remained in the area of Paraguay. Brazil in the mean time had quite a few good openings. Inside the 15th minute Brazil should have scored.  Neymar had set one up for Pato who could not find the right angle to beat Justo Viller who was the only man Pato had to beat. During the full first half Paraguay was not at all able to get the ball away from their side. Ganso played well, so as Ramires and Lucas, but still the goal was not seen from the Brazilian side.  Ganso in the mean time hit the post once but on the other hand the Brazil Goalkeeper Julio Cesar was almost a spectator through this half.

At the beginning of the 2nd half the Brazilians were making some serious moves as Maicon could have been seen many a times in the overlap run. One of those runs nearly brought the 1st goal to Brazil but again Pato could not finish it off. Viller continue to deny many of the Brazilian attacks and pressure started to build for the defending champions. Neymar was forced off with an injury and eventually Fred came in as his substitution. Fred was the man in the group match against Paraguay who had rescued his side with an 87th minute goal. Well, he nearly scored here as well. His header was headed out from the goal line by Barreto just before the end of the regulation time. So, Paraguay survived the way through somehow someway and followed a similar strategy in the extra time as well. The Paraguay defense was good, but the captain i.e. the their keeper was a real revolution whose performance allowed them to keep the things quite in the rest of the time too. The only big event of this period was that one man from the each side were sent off, Lucas and Alcaraz.

Upto this the Paraguay coach would have been damn satisfied with how the things had gone so far. Now all knows it can be anybody’s match in the shootouts but still the record books say that Brazil have a fair record in the tiebreakers. But more and more surprises were waiting for us so as the embarrassments for the Brazil supporters as Elano came to take the 1st one of the spot-kicks. And guess what?? A rugby shot came of his right foot. Paraguay could not take the lead as well. Barreto’s right footed in step went quite a far across from the post. Then the 2nd shot, in came Diego Silva. Well, he straight away went for power and Villar was able to get across his shot. Paraguay then went on to take the lead, so 0-1 to Paraguay. Then it was the time for Andre Santos, who did not set up any exception too. His shot went flying over the cross piece. Paraguay at once capitalized and doubled their lead. And after that? It was the man who came on to see Neymar off. The man who came in to rescue his side against Paraguay from a group league defeat – Fred. And can you believe it…? He smashes the ball way across the right post and the fans got silent… It was a Brazilian defeat!!

Brazil had their moments in the match, but they could not score. Don’t know what was the problem in the shoot out that everybody failed to score! Everything is the part of the game, even shoot outs , one can’t complaint after loosing in the penalties. And at the same time you can’t be over confident about finishing everything of within 90 or 120 minutes and not practicing penalties. This have been a major problem of the big teams when they go on to face out a tiebreaker against a weaker team. But this tournament has shown that even the teams from Latin America those were not even in the frame whatsoever have understood the playing style of the likes of Brazil-Argentina-Uruguay and Gerardo Martino did exactly that last night.
